About Us
At Dharma Buns Sandwich Company, we understand that far too often you have to settle for less when it comes to a quick bite to eat. We don't have to tell you how fast food restaurants that tout "quality" items for cheap prices usually serve an inferior product. They grab a frozen burger patty from halfway across the country and throw it on a greasy griddle, rip open a bag of crystallized potato strings and toss them into an idiot-proof automatic deep fry, and your end result pales in comparison to the picture on the menu. We say that's not cooking, that's heating.
We actually cook at Dharma Buns, because anything that's worth doing is worth doing right. Our experienced team grinds fresh beef to make our burgers right on the premises, we slice real rib eye steaks, we bake and trim our own roast beef and turkeys, we hand-cut and blanche real potatoes for our authentic Belgian fries, we even make our own soup stock! If we can't make it ourselves we only buy quality provisions, like our bread, π and pastries, which are brought in daily from DeFusco & Son Italian Bakery.
Because we make just about everything from scratch we actually lower our overhead since we don't buy overpriced, pre-portioned frozen foods. This translates into very reasonable prices for our customers. Our most expensive sandwich, the steak, is only $8.95. You could get a complete meal for just under $15. We may be a little more expensive than your standard fast food fare and we may take a little longer to prepare your order (usually between 10 to 15 minutes), but your dining experience will be exceptional and not soon forgot, because we're better than the rest, and we're serious about it.
At Dharma Buns we cater to quite a diverse crowd. The students trudging their way through deep research and term papers, professionals young and tenured hammering away at their careers, and of course those who know how to balance their hard-worked days with well-earned nights. We understand your life, your schedule and your needs. That's why we offer multiple service options, including online ordering and deliveries. We offer a wide variety of energy drinks, some rare and hard to find, and even caffeinated candies to get you going and keep you on your feet. We carry about 60 different varieties of top-shelf bottled beers ranging from Pale Lagers to premium Belgian Ales for those with more discerning tastes. We're open late, as late as 2 am on weekends, and we even offer a select late night menu so that you'll never get caught short for your midnight munchies again. We also offer free Wi-Fi in our dining area as well as a killer selection of magazines, books and other cool gear.
Dharma Buns Sandwich Company is a new restaurant from the culinary team of Creative Buffets. Founded in 1984 by John Capriole and his wife, Mary, Creative Buffets has offered full-service catering throughout Northeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire for 25 years. However, since 2003 John was looking to expand his business and open a restaurant or retail location. After years of searching for the perfect formula, in late 2008 we found an empty space in downtown Lowell, an area in the midst of a booming economic revival even despite the tough market. After a winter of research and development and seven months of extensive renovations, Dharma Buns was born.
The name "Dharma Buns" is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the novella The Dharma Bums, Lowell-native Jack Kerouac's sequel to the landmark beat novel On the Road. We're great admirers of Kerouac and beat culture (really all kinds of subculture). Our logo is a modified version of the Ba gua ("the eight symbols"), an ancient icon related to the I Ching and Feng Shui, as well as Dharma itself, a term associated with several Eastern philosophies which translates as, "the one true way."
